Students should be spending time at home researching their research report topics by visiting a bookstore or the library (SMM’s or a library elsewhere) and by investigating his chosen research report topic using online scholarly databases (.org, .edu, .gov). Students should have their approved thesis statements completed and by Thurs or Friday should be ready to talk casually but informatively for up to 4-5 minutes about their topics and the research that they have thus far completed. These 4-5 minute student “Ted Talks” as we are calling them should also include, aside from a few key facts on their topics, the names of 1-2 experts or authorities who’ve written about the topic and expert quotes and findings on the subject matter.
Pertaining to reading, please remind your student to read the class novel on a daily basis until he or she finishes it. That way students do not fall behind on the reading and are able to contribute valuably to our daily class discussions and weekly group activities related to the novel.
In Vocabulary, students are composing vocabulary lists based on unfamiliar words that they encounter in the novel (5 words a chapter should be listed and defined.) Students will be sharing their word lists and word definitions in class throughout the week.
